Employment Services
At Beth Shifra many immigrants would come with occupation tittles not heard of in the states. It was our job to sit down with the immigrant and see what jobs best fit their experience. Licenses in America are taken very seriously and one cann't practice the same occupation with out taking the proper tests and classes. Their are agencies that the government has set up to assist with that transition. We had doctors, dentists and others from the medical field talk to immigrants about the jobs in America. We had fellow immigrants explain to each other the jobs they took and the transitions needed to find their employers.
It is advisable especially for immigrants to look at the career you want to choose in an American Setting. If you want to work as a teacher for example, you should go to a school in your neighborhood and see their procedures. Many college students if interested in a specific career will visit the setting that they might like to work in.
For example:
A woman who may enjoy children but isn't sure what level or aspect of teaching they are interested in choosing should shadow someone in that field. They should work as assistant to a school psychologist or teacher and get a feeling for the atmosphere.
